This one’s special.

As I was inviting people to be guests on this residency, an old friend got in contact from out of the blue. He had listened to the first two episodes and wished to make a fitting contribution, sourcing the music solely from his extensive vinyl collection. How he even found out about my residency is a total mystery, as he has no social media or smartphone.

We met one night in 2015 in the Paris catacombs, and I remember our encounter vividly. We had an interesting conversation about techno, how he had never adhered to the futurist vision often associated to the genre. For him, it was rather about the past, about the basic human need to hypnotize ourselves by listening to + dancing to repetitive rhythms.

When I asked him to describe the mix, his answer was “modern mysticisms”. I can only agree, as the blend of obscure ambient and industrial beats, slowed-down 90s Italian hypno, chugging EBM, noisy New York house, Celtic drones, primitive speed-dembow, and dubby tribal techno is nothing short of intoxicating.

I recently got back in touch to tell him when the mix would be aired. I have yet to receive a response, and I’m unsure whether I will one day. He doesn’t wish to engage much with what he sees as a broken dance culture (rather calling it an ‘industry’), preferring to focus on learning about and nurturing the ecosystems that inhabit the corner of the Pyrénées mountains in which he lives.
