Emilie
I was born and raised by two egyptian-coptic parents in Paris and am currently studying literature, philosophy and art theory. In the process I started working in music journalism with two shows and podcasts for Radio Campus Paris.
Growing with egyptian and middle eastern culture since I was born while spending all my summers in Egypt gave me an unconditionnal love and curiosity for the music from the region.
“La nuit des divas” is a show that focuses on the generation of popular women singers from Arab countries beginning from the eighties such as Mayada El Hennawy, Sherine Abdelwahab, Majida El Roumi, and others. I showcased the artists, the main musical genres that they produce, and the model of the “arab” diva throughout different periods of time - alone or with specialists of this topic and artists.
With "Des souterains arabes, à la recherche de l'underground MENA" I am trying to explore the MENA underground music scenes each month with an artist, dj or cultural collective. I'm also a contributor for a small French independent music media, where I write about soul, neo-soul, and different genres of electronic music and rap and the platform Egypt Migrations.
This show is an oppportunity for doing what I love the most : listening to music and sharing mutual knowledge. I spend most of my time looking for emerging artists to listen to and analyze while listening to some artistst from the past. With every track i’ll select, i’ll share its context, something I find extremely important while digging all of those artists.
Everything we listen to has a story, a background, was produced by human beings who tried to tell us something during a particular moment. And this is what we’ll monthly talk about in this show : musical productions from the MENA region. From all genres across the span of eras, each one with its little hekaya (story lol) and with a different musical theme every month.
